Coleman Fine Art in Charleston, SC, Presents No Boundaries Series and Plein Air Paint Out

Mary Whyte

Coleman Fine Art in Charleston, SC, is proud to present a new series of visiting artist's exhibitions. The series, No Boundaries, will introduce up and coming artists to the community and allow collectors to get to know them through small intimate exhibits. The first presentation will introduce the work of painter and printmaker, Lou Hicks. No Boundaries will continue throughout the year during each of the French Quarter Gallery Association Art Walks. Hicks will join us for the first No Boundaries exhibit, on view from Mar. 1-13, 2004. Coleman Fine Art will also host five of the countries leading artists for a plein-air Paint Out from Mar. 22-26, 2004. The group of artists will include Billyo O'Donnell, Phil Sandusky, Chuck Waldman, Joe Paquet, and Mary Whyte. The artists will paint different locations in and around the Charleston area for one-week. An opportunity to view the works will be held Mar. 26, 2004, from 5-8pm at Coleman Fine Art. The event is free and open to the public.

Lou Hicks was born in Chicago, IL. She graduated from Northwestern University, and began painting at the age of thirty-seven when her sons began school. Hicks realized her need for a creative outlet and shortly after fell in love with painting and printmaking. She took her first art class at the Greenwich Art Council, followed by many others, where she developed her own style, and discovered her love for abstracts and monotypes. Hicks currently resides in Greenwich, CT, and works out of her studio in Port Chester, NY.

Hicks is very interested in the manipulation of color and layers of the medium she works with. When asked about her work she replies, "My paintings are about personal interiors - not what is seen outside. I strive to capture the initial feeling that was stirred by a certain place or thing." She hopes to evoke a feeling from within the viewer through her serene and quiet abstracts. The layers of color create an element of time, like an old wall whose original layers surface through the fresh paint. Each image begins to tell a story with a narrative that comes to her later on.

The five artists who are participating in the plein-air Paint Out in Charleston have been gathered from a larger group of 50 who will participate in a national traveling exhibition titled, Sea to Shining Sea: A Reflection of America. Coleman Fine Art brought these particular artists together because as a group they represent the different aspects of the United States.

An accomplished artist from St. Louis, MO, Billyo O'Donnell, strives for self-perfection in his work and is constantly inspired by the natural settings. Phil Sandusky, an artist from New Orleans, LA, enjoys capturing both cityscapes and landscapes on his canvas in plein-air. Chuck Waldman, visiting from Sonora, CA, began painting full time after 22 years of practicing medicine. Since turning his attention to his art he has been recognized by many prestigious art groups including the California Art Club and the Oil Painters of America.

Joe Paquet strives to capture the emotion of a place or time in turn capturing his emotion of the moment. Paquet will visit Charleston from St. Paul, MN. Our resident artist, Mary Whyte, will continue to capture breathtaking scenes with her watercolor brush and paper. Whyte is most recognized for her watercolor portraits of the African-American Gullah women who live on Johns Island, SC.
