March Issue 2005

City Art in Columbia, SC, Features Works by Bob Snead

City Art in Columbia, SC, is delighted to present Both Sides of Snead in Bob Snead's first solo exhibit in Columbia. The exhibit will open on Mar. 10 and continue through April 2, 2005.

Snead is a multi faceted art professional. By day Snead plays the role of professor, teaching printmaking at the College of Charleston; then he slips into Art Administrator as the founding member and director of Redux Contemporary Art Center; for 25 hours a week, he puts in time as a delivery driver at FedEx; and the rest of his time is spent with family. Somewhere between raising a family, renovating the Charleston Contemporary art scene, and teaching, Snead has found the time to paint. Snead's work, much like his professional life, has two sides.

The exhibition, titled Both Sides of Snead, will be displayed in the Main Gallery and in the Second Level Gallery at City Art. In the Main Gallery, Snead's series of serene still- lifes in oil will be on view. The still-lifes show a quite and peaceful side of Snead.

In the Second Level gallery, Snead's edgy and witty commentaries will be on display. Engaging the viewer, Snead uses humor to deal with underlying social issues. Inspired by comic books, Snead's figurative paintings have a bold, flat and illustrative quality. Including witty and sharp observations about his own life, Snead's work has become commentary on broader social issues. Referring to his comic book influence, Snead observes, "I never really developed into a comic artist, but it has become quite ironic that my work has evolved to include text as a pivotal portion where every horribly built sentence is crucial."

Snead also looks to his family and friends as a crucial element in his work. The figures of the people in his life and in his paintings represent and illustrate both personal and universal issues for Snead. "This body of work that focuses so heavily on these people has indirectly developed into a microcosm that makes statements on larger social issues of economics, marriage, sex, and identity."

Snead has been in the contemporary art spotlight with his satirical and autobiographical works. He has had success in the School's Out II: Emerging Artists of the Southeast 2004 at City Art, and in the Triennial 2004, at the State Museum in Columbia, curated by the South Carolina Arts Commission. Snead's work has also been featured in many group exhibits.
