Tyndall Galleries in Chapel Hill, NC, Features Works by Louis St. Lewis

The Tyndall Galleries in Chapel Hill, NC, are proud to present the exhibit, New Fables for the 21st Century, featuring recent paintings by Louis St. Lewis, on view through Apr. 2, 2005.

This exhibition marks the first Chapel Hill showing in over ten years of the works of St. Lewis, who is a Chapel Hill resident and has been named "Best Artist in the Triangle" seven times by Spectator/ Independent Magazine. The new paintings for this show are in oil and eglomise (reverse painting on glass) and are influenced by the whimsy and humor of Latin America. St. Lewis's widely praised glass collages will also be on display.

An artist praised by Andy Warhol, has been collected by celebrities including Christian Lacroix, HRH The Prince of Kuwait, and Andre Leon Talley. St. Lewis recently has had two of his paintings added to the permanent collection of the prestigious Ogden Museum in New Orleans, a Smithsonian affiliate, and the largest museum in the world dedicated to the promotion of Southern artists.

The artist was featured as the cover story for both RIFT and SKIRT! magazines in Charlotte, NC, and is currently working on a limited edition poster to benefit Playmakers Theater in Chapel Hill. St. Lewis has recently exhibited to critical acclaim in New York, San Francisco, New Orleans and Charlotte. New Orleans Gambit Weekly called the work of the artist "an uncanny mix of glamour, sex and antiquity."

Anne Heller, critic for Atlanta-based Artpapers, writes, "Louis St. Lewis is clearly one of the most talented artists to arise from that gothic moss-covered chrysalis called 'the South'. His eye is fresh, his hand is bold, and his paintings always challenge."

Tom Patterson of the Charlotte Observer is quoted as saying: "St. Lewis is a performance artist for whom the performance never ends; as an artist, he is sable in a world of rabbit."

Mark Sloan, photographer, writer and curator of College of Charleston's Halsey Gallery, says about the artist: "If people were electrical current, Louis St. Lewis would definitely be HIGH VOLTAGE. As an artist, he cringes at the notion of being simply decorative, or saleable and as a result, his art continues to grow in depth, significance, and historical importance."
