Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, Offers Faculty Exhibition

Appalachian State University presents the Faculty Biennial 2006 at the Catherine J. Smith Gallery and Turchin Center for the Visual Arts in Boone, NC. The exhibition will be on view through Mar. 18, 2006, and includes work by thirty-two artists currently teaching in the Art Department at Appalachian State University. Works in the show are comprised of a variety of media including: painting, sculpture, metalsmithing, fiber, photography, printmaking, drawing, installation, and clay. The exhibition is curated by Xandra Eden, Curator of Exhibitions at Weatherspoon Art Museum in Greensboro, NC.

This is the first occasion where the exhibition is divided between two venues, thus enabling visitors to experience more works by these local artists. Fourteen artists are exhibiting in Gallery A at the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts. These artists include: Jun Baba, Mary Babcock, Joe Bigley, Lynda Lea Bonkemeyer, Maryrose Carroll, Vicky Grube, Judy Humphrey, Samina Iqbal, Scott Ludwig, Robin Martindale, Edison Midgett, Ali Raza, Jody Servon, Marianne Suggs. Artists represented at Catherine J. Smith Gallery are: Kathleen Campbell, Maryrose Carroll, Chris Curtin, Alison Denyer, William DePauw, Lynn Duryea, Karin Eberhardt, Daniel Filippone, Tim Ford, Elissa Graff, Jeana Eve Klein, Gary Nemcosky, Una Pett, Mary Prather, Lisa Stinson, James Toub, Barbara Yale-Read, Margaret Yaukey.

Xandra Eden selected the works on view and designed the layout of the exhibition for both galleries. Her curatorial statement includes reflections about how the past year impacted many of the exhibiting artists: "War, terrorism, and natural disasters marked 2005 as a year that will not be forgotten. Made all too aware of the power of nature and the fragility of human life, many of us found ourselves on unsteady ground and some turned to the arts for meaning and solace."

"The Appalachian State University biennial faculty show has assembled a diverse group of artworks mostly created in 2005, many of which speak to the temperament of that year," adds Eden. "At the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts, the exhibition reflects investigations of personal and cultural identity inspired by events of the recent past. In the Catherine J. Smith Gallery, the dichotomy between man-made and natural worlds is addressed, as is portraiture and the body in relationship to the earth."

Laura Ives, Chair of the Art Department, states, "We are especially pleased to have the respected curatorial expertise of Xandra Eden. Eden has organized and designed a thoughtful exhibition. Sharing her expertise about the complex interrelationship between the aesthetic, economic, and political dimensions of displaying contemporary art has greatly benefited art faculty and students." Ives continues, "The strength of the Department of Art at Appalachian State is in its dedicated faculty members who are committed to excellence in teaching, scholarship and research. It is an honor to work with this unique, talented and diverse group of artist."
