Artful Living in Hickory, NC, Features Works by Jean Cauthen

Artful Living located on Level Three at the Hickory Furniture Mart in Hickory, NC, will continue its Artist Series with a presentation of major works by artist Jean Cauthen. The exhibition will be on view from Mar. 1 - 31, 2006.

After growing up in Italy, New Orleans, South Carolina and North Carolina, Cauthen earned a BFA from East Carolina University, Greenville, NC. She also received her MFA at James Madison University, VA. Cauthen has taught at various colleges and universities, served as curator at the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center, Virginia, broadcast designer at WSET, courtroom artist and freelance illustrator. Since 1998 Cauthen has served as the Director and Instructor of the Caldwell Community College's Art Program, Hudson, NC.

Cauthen offered the following about her work, "My concentration for the past few years has been a response to this region of Western North Carolina. It is a small-town, rural perspective of the gently rolling hills to the factories, mills and street corners. The red earth is a constant undercurrent in all the paintings. I feel this way of life is on the verge of endangerment and I hope to somehow preserve this moment and the identity of the small town. I strive to avoid an overly sweet interpretation, instead seeking an order in the remnants of buildings and landscape here. Much of the history of this area is centered on the labor of the factory worker. Currently, the deserted remains of those factories stand like aging monuments. I paint these modern ruins and hope to evoke the sense of work that lingers there."

Cauthen has had works included in the following exhibits: 2006 NCCC Systems Office Juried Exhibition, Raleigh, NC; 2005 Palettes and Palete Exhibition, Lynchburg, VA; Faculty Exhibition, Queens College, Charlotte, NC; Italian Landscapes, Caldwell Arts Council, Lenoir, NC; Small Works, New York City Juried Exhibit; and Landscapes, a two-person exhibition at 2nd St. Gallery, NY.

Artful Living offers the areas largest inventory of original and reproduction artwork.
