City Gallery at Dock Street Theatre in Charleston, SC, Features Works by McLean J. Stith

The City Gallery at Dock Street Theatre in Charleston, SC, will present an exhibition, entitled Openings, featuring works of mixed media on canvas by Charleston artist, McLean J. Stith, on view from Mar. 10 - Apr. 7, 2006.

McLean J. Stith started painting in 1997 in an effort to balance the academic demands of medical school. During her dermatology residency in Charleston, her medical career took shape around the human integument while her artistic career commenced upon the membrane of the canvas. Stith continued to paint while completing her residency and establishing a private practice in Charleston. During this time, her painting has evolved from a reactionary avocation to a complementary devotion.

Over the past eight years, McLean's work has ranged from figurative, iconoclastic diptychs and loose, evocation still lives to landscapes full of mood and energy. She has recently worked in a serious format to more fully explore the elements of opposition and tension in her work. Stith started showing in 1997 and has successfully sold with minimal representation or promotion.

Stith comments on her work, "These flowers have been painted in the barren winter while awaiting the opening bloom of spring. Exploring my fascination with the tension of opposing forces, I have used unconventional materials and techniques to interpret customary subject matters. Making use of found materials (house paint, door panels, used drop cloths) and non-academic techniques (spray bottles, toes, "spills") I hope to create compositions that might stir a contemplative disquiet."
