Shain Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Connie Winters and Darren Young

Shain Gallery in Charlotte, NC, presents Moments in Time, featuring new works by Connie Winters and Darren Young, on view from Mar. 3 to Apr. 15, 2006.

Connie Winters' Impressionistic oil paintings reflect her curiosity for color and passion for the French landscape. Motivated by its canals, architecture and culture, Winters is drawn to the pastoral regions of Provence and Dordogne, in France's countryside. Winters' canvases are soaked in color and reflect her understanding of the quiet moments that she captures.

Winters' artistic foundation began in early childhood when she began experimenting with paints and crayons provided to her by her mother. Later, she pursued a more formal education and studied with Phillip Moose, a North Carolina Pulitzer Prize winner, Shirley Markham, and the late Alice Steadman. Winters continued her studies more recently in Atlanta, at the Chatov Studio, and has worked privately with Alice Williams. Her inspired landscapes and still life works earned her national recognition and can be found in many distinguished collections including: the Coca-Cola Collection, the private collection of John Randolph Hearst Jr., and the Duke Mansion, Charlotte, NC.

Darren Young received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Painting from East Carolina University in 1995. He was awarded a Graduate Scholarship in 1998 from Indiana University and graduated with a Master's of Fine Arts degree in Painting.

Young's paintings express his strong interest in his surroundings and his concentration on paint application. His distinctive landscapes are created by soft and fluid brushstrokes and express a quietness within the painter himself and his locality. These works are thick with atmosphere because of his successful juxtaposition of warm and cool tones and convey his deep understanding of the undisturbed environment.

The exhibit will also include paintings from Young's newest series of genre paintings, depicting interior tavern scenes. These compositions feature fascinating architectural and figurative studies, reflecting a more deliberate application of the brush. By painting on panel, Young uses the slick surface of this medium to full advantage, capturing a stronger sense of light and contrast to suggest mood.

Young has held several impressive teaching positions at Winthrop University and Wingate Universities, and worked as a painting instructor in Noves, France. In 2001 Young was the recipient of the "Best in Show" award from the All Colorado Art Show from the Curtis Center of Arts and Humanities, Denver, CO. His works have been collected by several and corporate collections, notably, Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC.
