Somerhill Gallery in Chapel Hill, NC, Features Works by Three New Artists

Somerhill Gallery in Chapel Hill, NC, announces the exhibit, Out Prospecting, an exhibition of three landscape painters new to the gallery. Recent paintings will be featured by Scott Addis, Iantha Newton, and Genevieve Redmond. The exhibition will be on display through Mar. 23, 2006.

Scott Addis

Born in Ohio and residing in Quebec, Canada, Scott Addis's approach to rendering the landscape is more of an emotional response to circumstance rather than an exact representation of place or time. Addis' landscapes are gestural with numerous layers of glaze, heavy paint and expressive brushwork. His work could be considered contemporary transitional in that it borrows heavily from both impressionism and abstract expressionism, combined in a way that allows for not only a strong visual connection but also an emotional one.

Largely self-taught, after a traveling career in the Navy, Addis enrolled in various classes and was later invited to be artist-in-residence at both the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT, and Pouch Cove in St. John's NFLD. Now a full-time professional artist, Addis is internationally represented by galleries throughout Canada and the US. His first museum exhibition will open in July 2006 at the Springfield Museum of Fine Arts in Ohio.

Iantha Newton

Born in London, England and residing in Chattanooga, TN, Iantha Newton will be exhibiting recent works from her ongoing series The Ethereal Landscape. This series of paintings emerges from a process that encourages the spontaneous act of image making. The resulting paintings are a subconscious outporing of internal unpremeditated imagery. Newton comments, "I am enchanted by the 'intimate' in nature and I hope the paintings convey not only that enchantment but also my appreciation for the beauty of nature to heal, refresh, and renew."

Having received a Bachelors of Arts from North London University, Newton has been involved in numerous exhibitions throughout the Southeast and has paintings in public and private collections. She has been artist-in-residence for many NC art projects, including the NC Arts Council Group Home mural project, in Raleigh, NC.

Genevieve Redmond

Born in Cazenovia, NY, and residing in there, Genevieve Redmond received her education at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School. Redmond's paintings have been included in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and cultural institutions, including the Erie Canal Museum in New York; the Munson-William Proctor Institute in Utica, NY; and the Copley Society and Colonnade Hotel Gallery in Boston. Her work is also in private and corporate collections, including those of Scmalenbyrger and Nargassan in Boston and the River Valley Corporation in Syracuse, NY. Redmond's paintings were also selected for the Art in Embassies Program of the United States Department of State in Washington, DC.

Somerhill Gallery Director, Joe Rowand recently commented, "Years ago columnist Charles Horton who wrote About Town for the Chapel Hill Newspaper, observed my behavior in attending exhibition openings, greeting me 'Hi Joe, out prospecting?' viewing slides that come in the mail, testing my responses, spinning to recognize the quickening of my heartbeat. So it is with this exhibition, we present, three artists new to Somerhill, proving that 'thar's gold in them thar hills.'"
