Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, Features Works by Bob Dalton

Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, is featuring the underwater photography of Bob Dalton in a show entitled Beneath the Surface. The exhibit, which runs from Mar. 1 through Apr. 21, 2006, is a collection of striking, full-color images of sea creatures such as sharks, sea anemones, octopi and needle fish.

One beautifully composed shot of a shark camouflaged behind a school of fish was selected by Nature's Best magazine as an Honor Image in the publication's photo contest. It hung in the Smithsonian as part of the Gallery of Prints. The shark was a sand tiger photographed in about 60 feet of water above the USS Tarpon off Okracoke Island, NC.

Dalton has been a professional photographer for 30 years. He began as a biology major and then spent a year and a half of graduate study in marine biology. Somewhere along the way he realized that photography was what he truly wanted to do. So he gave up marine biology and moved to Daytona Beach to attend photography school.

The artist said, "I have made my living as a commercial photographer; however, underwater photography has been my love. Being able to combine biology, marine biology and photography has been wonderful."

Now a resident of High Point, NC, Dalton lived for a year in the Cayman Islands, while working on a stock photography project. Many of his underwater images are from Grand Cayman, Belize and Bonaire.

Dalton said, "I learned to Scuba dive before I could drive so I have been diving for over 40 years, and have been a PADI DiveMaster for 20, so combining underwater photography and marine biology turned out to be a natural progression." He added that he tries to look at nature and see its details from a different perspective.

Ginny Lassiter, owner of Sunset River Marketplace, said, "Bob's composition is stunning, his colors are rich and his subject matter is unusual. I think visitors to the gallery are really going to enjoy this exhibit."
