Art League of Hilton Head on Hilton Head Island, SC, Features Works by Sara Tiffany and Cheryl Coe Eppolito

Art League of Hilton Head on Hilton Head Island, SC, will present the exhibitions including: A Cornucopia of the Arts, featuring 3-d works by Sara Tiffany and Celebrating My Passions, featuring works by Cheryl Coe Eppolito. Both exhibits will be on view at the Art League Gallery in Pineland Station on Hilton Head Island, SC, from Mar. 13 through Apr. 7, 2007.

Sara Tiffany is nationally recognized as an authority on antique ornamental painting. She has been featured in Early American Life Magazine which publishes a directory of the top crafts people and artists who use traditional tools and techniques. She has been doing decorative arts for more than 30 years.

Large lace-edged metal trays covered in black with freehand ornamentation in gold or bronze, or bright floral patterns are Tiffany's specialty. She also does country painting, stenciling on wood, tin and glass, gold-leaf applications on tin and glass, trompe l'oeil, clock dials, pen work and restoration.

Tiffany's exhibition includes examples of many of these specialized techniques. In keeping with the tradition of her craft, she uses only sable brushes and uses paints made of natural ingredients.

It was while living in Pennsylvania and raising a family that Tiffany was attracted to decorative painting as done by a neighbor. She has been perfecting her craft over the years through research and visits to centers like the Museum of Decorative Art in Paris.

Cheryl Coe Eppolito's move to Hilton Head Island with her husband in 2004 helped her to "rediscover the joy of painting" that she had left behind many years ago. Her first oil painting was done while she was a senior in high school in Buffalo, NY.

Eppolito's work vacillates between still lifes, portraits and landscapes, each medium allowing her to demonstrate her painting skills in different ways. Still life and portraiture appeal to her love of detail and texture. By contrast, landscape work allows Eppolito to bring spontaneity to her brush. Working in painterly strokes, she balances tonal values, constantly aware of the play of light and shadow. She is drawn to vibrant color and strong contrasts in her work.

Eppolito begins each day with a sunrise walk on the beach, gathering ideas for her paintings. She says she is totally dedicated and passionate about becoming an accomplished artist. "The countless images I dream of painting - from a child playing in the sand dunes to a bowl of vibrantly colored pears - remind me of my reason to paint, says Eppolito. "Let the beauty of what you love be what you do."
