Cameo Art Gallery in West Columbia, SC, Features Works by Debbie Martin

Cameo Art Gallery in West Columbia, SC, will present an exhibit entitled, Nature's Course, featuring works by Debbie Martin, on view from Mar. 16 - 30, 2007.

Martin was born in Tennessee, but has been a resident of Columbia for over 30 years. A self-taught artist, Martin explains, "Formal art education frustrated me more than encouraged me. I allowed that frustration to change my path. I pursued the study of art on my own. My work has always been influenced by my desire to be creative."

"When I paint, I simply enjoy the energetic flow and creative process, " adds Martin. "It is a joy to follow my passion. Inspiration is infinite and the desire to express is extremely pressing."

The approach to Martin's painting stems from personal experience and exploration. A love of nature influences most of her work. Color is very important. Martin enjoys working with the colors and how they relate as the painting develops. The interplay of color provokes such pleasure for her as she paints that she doesn't want it to end.

Martin's abstract landscapes with obscure shapes vary considerably in color and light. Often the title of her works will suggest the origin of the composition but the emotional quality is created by the choice of colors. Memories of time spent near the water or admiring a beautiful sunny afternoon are magnified as Martin paints them on canvas.
