Gallery Cornelia in Charleston, SC, Offers Works by Dorothy Montgomery

Gallery Cornelia in Charleston, SC, is presenting the exhibit, Quilts Celebrate - Spirituals - South Carolina State Music, featuring works by Dorothy Montgomery, quilter, musician, and storyteller, on view through Mar. 20, 2007.

The stories told on the quilts in this exhibition center around Spirituals. Spirituals are acknowledged by South Carolina as the South Carolina State Music. This exhibition heralds Montgomery's insights regarding spirituals and the historical significance of contributions by African American to music.

Montgomery's aim is to educate, entertain, and excite the viewer to learn more about African American musical styles. She says of her work, "When I took a quilting class to replace the torn and frayed quilts of my elders, I realized that quilts could communicate the story and history of a people's songs and save a heritage, just as quilts once communicated paths to freedom and gave a heritage".

Montgomery adds, "I have made many discoveries since starting this journey. I use quilts to illustrate the songs, poems, stories and essays I wrote. My creative writings are about songs African Americans created, adapted or influenced."

Gallery Cornelia, a new fine arts gallery on the Charleston art scene, specializes in nationally recognized African American artists and contemporary women artists. Yvonne Pickering Carter, gallery curator and artist, is Professor Emerita and returned to her hometown, Charleston, after a career as Art Professor and Department Chairperson at the University of the District of Columbia, an open admission land-grant university. Carter is devoted to bring quality art to the low country.
