Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, is presenting the exhibition, 2008 Appalachian State University Department of Art Biennial, on view at the Catherine J. Smith Gallery (through Mar. 7, 2008) and Turchin Center for the Visual Arts (through Mar. 15, 2008).

The exhibition includes work by artists currently teaching in the Department of Art at Appalachian State University. Works in the show are comprised of a variety of media including: painting, sculpture, metalsmithing, fiber, photography, printmaking, drawing, video, digital projections, installation, and clay. The exhibition is juried by Melissa Post, Curator, Museum of Glass, Tacoma, WA.

The presentation of this exhibition is collaboration between the Department of Art and the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts. This is the second occasion where the exhibition is presented at two venues enabling visitors to experience a wider range of artworks in multiple locations on campus.

Artists that are exhibiting in Gallery A at the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts include: Adam Adcock, Kathleen Campbell, Maryrose Carroll, Christopher Curtin, Lynn Duryea, Judy Humphrey, Scott Ludwig, Robin Martindale, Sean Matthews, Janet Montgomery, Lilith Nielander, Mark Nystrom, Mary Prather, and Lisa Stinson with Ken Carder.

Post selected the works on view and designed the layout of the exhibition for both galleries. Ms. Post stated that, "Exhibitions are a partnership between the curator and the artists. The success of any juried exhibition relies on the caliber of works submitted and the curator's ability both to discern truly outstanding works and to edit them. Such conditions present the opportunity for both to shine."

The works in the exhibition highlight the efforts of faculty members who are committed to not only being motivators and mentors for students, but to engaging in scholarship and research related to their craft. Post's curatorial statement discusses themes addressed by the exhibiting artists: "The 2008 Appalachian State University Department of Art Biennial comprises an eclectic array of works, encompassing media ranging from drawing, painting and photography to functional and sculptural objects in ceramic, fiber, glass, metal and wood to mixed and new media installations. Equally diverse, were the recurrent themes that define this year's work, including: Nature and the environment; time, space and passage; portraiture and the human condition."
