Charleston Crafts in Charleston, SC, Offers Open House on Mar. 28, 2008

Charleston Crafts in Charleston, SC, will be hosting an Open House on Mar. 28, 2008, from 5:30 to 7:30pm. The theme for the evening is Black & White: Duality, and will feature works by two artists, Jennifer J. Daly, a photographer, and Kelly Thiel, a potter. These two women work in the concept of contrasts, and the inherent duality of things that are so often found in life. Some of the polar opposites that show up in their work are controlled vs. uncontrolled and new vs. old.

Daly, a film photographer, works in a relatively new medium that is changing and improving almost daily. Thiel, a potter, works in a medium that has been around for centuries, with many of the techniques remaining unchanged. Interestingly enough, both processes create a product that will last for generations and result in an artwork that has, in many ways, a timeless quality.

Daly, working in black and white as well as color, photographs life around the Lowcountry and her travels throughout the United States and Costa Rica. She will be exhibiting her work at the Piccolo Spoleto Craft Show in Wragg Square, May 30 - June 1, 2008. Her works can also be viewed at any time at Charleston Crafts. Daly has won several awards and has been published in a local Charleston book, Charleston, SC and the Low Country.

Kelly Thiel is an award-winning, local clay artist, working in stoneware clay making functional pottery and figurative sculpture. Her works can be seen at the South Carolina Artisans Center in Walterboro, SC, Carolina Clay Gallery at Kiawah, SC, and at Charleston Crafts.

Charleston Crafts is the oldest fine craft cooperative in Charleston and has approximately 30 members working in jewelry, clay, photography, basketry, wood turning, and fiber. Located on Hasell Street, the gallery is close to the Charleston Place parking garage. Come join us for an evening of refreshments, see our newly renovated gallery, and meet the featured and other member artists.
