Hodges Taylor Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Cristina Cordova

Hodges Taylor Gallery in Charlotte, NC, will present works by Cristina Cordova in her second solo exhibition, on view from Mar. 7 through Apr. 26, 2008.

Originally from Puerto Rico, Cordova currently maintains her studio in Penland, NC, where she recently was appointed a Trustee of the Penland School of Crafts.

Cordova's ceramic sculptures speak poignantly to her viewers, not so much for their beauty as for their ability to reach deep inside each of us. In fact, the exterior of these works frequently suggests our faults, while the body gestures generate a narrative that is cross-cultural and universal. Elongated hands and fingers are exquisitely crafted; the eyes look into the soul.

"Cordova leaves you with a longing," commented one critic. Ancient myths form the basis for some of these works; interpretations of animals as well as boats carry these figures into the future, figures laden with symbols of their history. There is, finally, great beauty here, though perhaps not overtly obvious. It slowly seeps into your subconscious, becoming part of you. Such is the stuff of great art.
