Lowcountry Artists in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Dawn Caldwell and Jackie Wukela
Lowcountry Artists, Ltd., in Charleston, SC, announces a showing of new work by Dawn Caldwell and Jackie Wukela entitled, Charleston in Spring Paradise Found!, on view from Mar. 7 - 31, 2008.
The month of March in Charleston is a season to touch the heart and creative spirit of any resident or visitor, but especially the artists in our midst. Caldwell and Wukela have brought together a body of work to celebrate this season as only painters can.
Dawn Caldwell
Dawn Caldwell, long known for her watercolor excellence, brings us new energy with selections in pastels. She takes the viewer on a veritable House and Garden tour, bringing them past bright window boxes to lush courtyard gardens, all done in subtle darks accented with sharp splashes of light - "cool in the morning and warmed for the late afternoon".
Jackie Wukela
A counterpoint to Caldwell's work, Jackie Wukela gives us a range of offerings from large palette knife landscapes of the Lowcountry's public gardens at Magnolia and Middleton plantations, to smaller very realistic florals in colored pencil. "I am always exploring and I have really enjoyed working with the palette knife. We don't see quite so much of it in our area and it has been great to explore what that little knife can do. The work becomes more and more impressionistic, almost toward abstraction - I love pushing that envelope. And you feel like an Old Master smearing large quantities of paint all over."
Colored pencil is traditionally Wukela's long suit. The works included here are small gems. The rich color and detail shown in the individual blooms show the versatility of this unexpected medium.
Altogether this showing brings the joy of a Carolina spring, paradise, Charleston-style.
