Tryon Fine Arts Center in Tryon, NC, Offers Sculpture Exhibition

Tryon Fine Arts Center in Tryon, NC, will host the exhibit, Sculpturama - 2008, presented by the Tryon Painters and Sculptors in the Center's Gallery 1, from Mar. 9 through Apr. 7, 2008.

Tryon Painters and Sculptors approached Sculpturama with great ambitions for the local organization and art community. An expansive name for the show seemed just right. TP&S wants to encourage interest in sculpture of all sizes. Sculpture will be competing in one of three separate categories: tabletop, wall, or floor sculpture. The organization hopes to attract artists who create wall tiles, mosaics, sconces, and bas-relief for indoor or outdoor spaces. The floor sculpture category includes those 24 to 72 inches. Space considerations forced us to decline monumental entries such as an eight-foot tall bear.

Sculpturama is ambitious when it comes to seeking substantial awards in order to attract and recognize outstanding artists in the western Carolinas. We are proud of our sponsors for recognizing the importance of encouraging and supporting artists in our area. These talented artists contribute to what makes the western Carolinas such a unique and rich cultural environment. Sculpturama is being sponsored by businesses, individuals and grants. Nineteen businesses, including one from Asheville, NC, and two from Spartanburg, SC, are sponsoring the awards. The NC Arts Council and TP&S's own Fund for Sculptors have provided grants for the show.

We anticipated that Sculpturama would attract a variety of sculpture and require someone with an extensive background to jury the show. It is an honor to have Stoney Lamar of Saluda, NC, as our judge. Lamar is a nationally-known fine art sculptor who works in wood and steel. His art is in museums and galleries across the country. Tryon may know him from his curatorship of a wood sculpture show at the Upstairs Artspace, or from his work shown at Blue Spiral 1 in Asheville.
