Upstairs Artspace in Tryon, NC, Offers Maxfield Parrish Collection

The Upstairs Artspace in Tryon, NC, is presenting the exhibition, Maxfield Parrish: Of Make Believe and Luminosity, on view through Apr. 19, 2008.

The exhibit is comprised of selections from the major private collection of Harriet and J. Alan Peoples, who have been acquiring Parrish for more than 25 years. This is the first time they have made the collection available for public viewing.

Parrish is considered one of the greatest American illustrators of the 20th century and was an enormously popular artist in his day. Younger people often don't recognize Parrish's name, but his art is as familiar as a flapper dress or Tiffany lamp. In the 1920s he was highly sought after to illustrate magazines and books; at the same time prints of his utopian landscape paintings decorated thousands of homes.

The Upstairs exhibit presents more than 150 pieces in a vibrant representation of Parrish at the height of his career, including original prints, book and magazine illustrations, magazine covers, calendars and commercial product advertisements. (Note: There are no original paintings in the exhibit.)

While most of the work is not for sale, the collectors are making some items available for purchase to benefit the Upstairs, which is a nonprofit organization.

A "Walk & Talk" tour of the art is on Mar. 9, 2008, at 2pm. On Mar. 25, 2008, at 7pm, Alan Peoples will give an informal lecture (with PowerPoint) titled "The Passionate Collector."
