Wells Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Glenn and Evan Harrington in New Location

The Wells Gallery in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibition, Father and Son, featuring works by internationally renowned figurative painter Glenn Harrington and his son, emerging still-life painter Evan Harrington. The exhibit, on view from Mar. 7 - 21, 2008, will be the inaugural exhibition for the gallery's new, stunningly renovated location at 125 Meeting Street in downtown Charleston.

Glenn Harrington

Starting out as an illustrator for Golf magazine, Glenn Harrington (b. 1959) has since developed a following for his personality-laden portraits. Having painted the who's who of the golf circuit for decades, Harrington's distinguished portraits hang in the collections of the World Golf Hall of Fame, the Jack Nicklaus Museum, the Golf Channel, and the Doonbeg Golf Club, among others. When Wells Gallery owner Hume Killian spotted Harrington's painting of golfer Tom Watson at the opening celebration of the Cassique course at Kiawah, he knew the work was something special. "Glenn has such an emotional connection with his subjects," says Killian.  "He brings their stories to life with delicate skill."

Glenn Harrington is also recognized for his intimate portrayals of the figure that will be featured in this exhibition. Whether in costume, repose, or in a street café scene, "these are portraits of a moment, not of the person," explains Harrington. He finds the "ordinary moments in between what we would call events" to be a fascinating study of how people perceive one another. With sincere brushwork, luminous color, and a gift for composition, Harrington captures the spectrum of human emotion, from the sleek elegance of a stylish flapper in Charleston Dancer to the poignant yearnings of a young woman on the threshold in Reminiscence.

Educated at the Pratt Institute and now residing in Bucks County, PA, Glenn Harrington has received much critical acclaim.  Last year alone he won the coveted Draper Grand Prize from the Portrait Society of America's international juried show and received an Award of Excellence at the annual juried exhibit of Oil Painters of America. In addition, his paintings have graced the covers of over 500 books and have been featured on numerous playbills and movie posters.  Glenn Harrington continues to exhibit widely, with solo gallery and museum shows around the world including New York, London, and Tokyo.

Evan Harrington

Glenn Harrington is also the proud father of two creatively-inclined sons, Sean and Evan; Sean chose music while Evan (b. 1989) followed in his father's footsteps but in the slightly different direction of still life. He studied at the Arcuri Studio and the Chocheli School of Fine Art in Philadelphia, and in 2006 received "Best of Show" as well as Superior and Excellent ribbons in painting at the prestigious ACSI Mid Atlantic Region Fine Arts Exhibition. Now in his first year on a merit scholarship at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, Evan Harrington has already sold a number of works through the Wells Gallery as his early promise is revealed in his sure hand for light and an appreciation for the nuances of color.  Although he has studied the figure, Evan Harrington is intrigued instead by the composition of still life as "creating a stage - not for humans, but for my characters, which are fruit or vases."  Beautiful decorative items mingle with ripened, luxurious edibles in oil-on-linen paintings such as Watermelon with Grapes and Silver Pot with Peaches.

Newly relocated to 125 Meeting Street next to the Gibbes Museum of Art in historic downtown Charleston, the Wells Gallery features fine regional art from a diversity of perspectives in various mediums, including painting and hand-blown glass. A member of the Charleston Fine Art Dealers' Association and the French Quarter Gallery Association. An additional gallery is located at The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort on Kiawah Island, SC.
