Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC, Offers Works by Ann Stoddard

Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC, is presenting sculptural paintings by Ann Stoddard at The Sandor Teszler Library Gallery through Mar. 28, 2008.

A Spartanburg native, Stoddard holds a BFA from the University of South Carolina and a MFA in sculpture and printmaking from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Her work is held in numerous collections throughout the Southeast, as well as Canada and Europe. Currently she has two exhibitions in China.

Stoddard says that in her explorations in art, "there is a common denominator that resurfaces; it is associated with quilts, with cutting, piecing, sections of memory, patterns, records, discs, visual poems, obsession with pattern, symbology, a subliminal surreal space, light and dark." In this current exhibition, many of her fabric works evoke a sense of the familiar in their bright colors and plaid designs, but also suggest mystery, with some pieces rolled to reveal only a portion of the surface - hiding part of the message.
