Nested in Carrboro, NC, Features Works by Carolyn Butler

Nested, home and gift gallery in Carrboro, NC, is presenting an exhibit of drawings by Carolyn Butler, on view in Wee Gallery through Mar. 31, 2009.

Butler received her BFA in Textile Design from the Rhode Island School of Design. She lives in Chapel Hill, NC, and teaches middle and upper school art at Trinity School.

The exhibit presents selections from a drawing series created in response to the gentrification of College Hill in Providence, RI. "A few years into renting in that upscale neighborhood, I was surprised to learn that the streets previously housed a community of primarily low-income residents, as recently as 40 years ago," says Butler. "Over a few decades, this traditionally African-American neighborhood shifted to house a very different demographic, showcasing the collection of elite, high-end historic homes that I had come to know. I became interested in the stories of the relocation of the former College Hill residents, and was moved by accounts that expressed feelings of dismay in response to the economic changes and political choices that caused their community to break down. In response to their stories, I created drawings that dealt with themes of dislocation, community, loss, and isolation. Using the symbol of the colonial home, I created arrangements that either invoke a sense of belonging or rejection, combining traditional decorative elements inside discomforting compositions."
