University of South Carolina Upstate in Spartanburg, SC, Presents Exhibit of Encaustics

Christl Niemuller

University of South Carolina Upstate in Spartanburg, SC, is presenting, Contemporary Encaustics, an exhibition of contemporary encaustics by artists working in the Eastern US and Canada. The exhibition is on view in The Curtis R. Harley Art Gallery through Mar. 27, 2009.

Jane Allen Nodine

The term encaustic is derived from the Greek "enkaustikos", which means "to heat" or "to burn." The encaustic medium consists of beeswax mixed with resin to impart hardness that renders a material artists can use to embed various marks, materials, pigments and textures. This historical process used by ancient Greeks and Romans has attracted the attention of many contemporary artists because of its rich surfaces and sculptural properties.

Lisa Pressman

Artists selected for this exhibition met in 2007 at a professional workshop on encaustic techniques sponsored by R&F Paint Manufacturing of Kingston, NY. Each artist was drawn to the encaustic process out of an interest and inquisitiveness for the process and result of heating and manipulating wax into seductive and mystical layers of color, image and surface. Though the artists have varied backgrounds and live in various regions of the country, all are working artists and many are also art instructors at institutions in the US and Canada. Each artist will present several examples of their work rendering an exhibit with varied approaches to style, technique, subject, and color palette.

The exhibiting artists include: Imna Arroyo, Connecticut; Carmel Brennan, Canada; Mariana Depetris, Georgia; Dorothy Imagire, Connecticut; Kate Miller, Florida; Deborah Nathan, Massachusetts; Christl Niemuller, Canada; Jane Allen Nodine, South Carolina; Lisa Pressman, New Jersey; and Debra Warner, Pennsylvania.
