City Art in Columbia, SC, Offers Several Exhibits During the Month of April

City Art, in Columbia, SC, will be presenting three exhibitions during the month of Apr., including the 20th Annual Juried Exhibition of the Trenholm Artist Guild, a solo exhibition by Angela Bradburn, and works by Heather W. LaHaise in the Art Weekly Gallery.

Trenholm Artist Guild's 20th Annual Juried Exhibition will take place in City Art's Main Gallery April 2-14. The show was juried by Steve Nevitt of Columbia College Department of Art. Among the entrants in the exhibit is Mark Conrardy whose work won Best in Show at the 2000 exhibit and First Place, Merit Award and Art of Artists awards at three successive SC State Fair Fine Art Exhibitions.

The Best in Show and numerous other awards will be presented during a reception held Apr. 5, from 6-8pm.

Angela Bradburn

Intimate Perspectives, featuring paintings by Angela Bradburn, will be in the Main Gallery, Apr. 20 through June 30, 2001. The exhibit will be City Art's featured exhibition during the annual Artista Vista, Apr. 27&28.

Intimate can be described as - inmost, essential, most private or personal, closely acquainted or associated, very familiar (friendly), resulting from careful study or investigation, very close.

"The paintings in this exhibit reflect intimacy on several levels. The picture plane in a number of the paintings is 'up-close and personal'. These paintings are observances of natural objects such as pinecones, leaves, flowers, etc. done from very close range, even larger than life. The landscapes reflect a personal feeling I have for places I love and enjoy remembering. Conveying an emotional quality that people have experienced and can relate to is more important than literal representation of a particular place. The City Art exhibit includes both watercolor and oil paintings," comments Bradburn.

"My mother was a painter," she continues. "I remember as a youngster being fascinated as I watched her paint. I was so excited and wanted to do that myself. Today I continue to be fascinated by the process and the excitement of watching a painting develop. I enjoy exploring and observing the ever-changing landscape, which is a strong influence in my work. When traveling, I take photographs, make sketches, and take notes that serve as reminders of what I felt and observed. This information is a valuable resource when I begin painting in the studio. As an artist I continue to study, learn, and grow. This keeps me excited about what I do."

City Art is particularly pleased to be showcasing Angela Bradburn's work for Artista Vista. "Angela has been an important client for twenty-five years," says Wendy Thomas of City Art. "We have had the opportunity to watch her grow and progress as a painter to reach the level of competence and unique perspective that she brings to each of her works of art. Her sincerity and reverence for the world around her are always present in her imagery. Bradburn's diligence and delightful personality have propelled her creativity and skill to the top of her peers."

Bradburn has participated in many juried exhibitions and invitational shows. She is widely collected and has won numerous awards. She is a signature member of National Watercolor Society, Southern Watercolor Society, and South Carolina Watercolor Society (President 1996-97). She has had paintings published in books by Rockport Publishers and SC Wildlife Magazine.

During Artista Vista, City Art, will also be featuring works by Heather W. LaHaise in the Art Weekly Gallery. The exhibit begins Apr. 26 and continues through May 2.

Columbia artist LaHaise graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1989 with a degree in art. Upon graduating she moved to New York and studied illustration at Pratt Institute. After a seven year career in graphic design, she is now pursuing her first love of drawing and painting. Her unique style is revealed in any medium she uses and her technique evokes a sensation of texture, light, and movement. She brings the art of style to you with a fresh approach through her unique compositions. Her love and compassion for dogs is also often expressed in her work.
