SC Watercolor Society's Annual Exhibition to be Held on Hilton Head Island, SC

Billie De La Penha, the winner in 2000

The South Carolina Watercolor Society (SCWS) will host its 24th Annual Awards Exhibition on Hilton Head Island, SC, from Apr. 20 through June 24, 2001 (Exhibition Event Schedule). The events will begin with Art Market, a program that features more than 250 paintings at The Mall at Shelter Cove, on Hilton Head Island, from Apr. 20-27. During the Art Market, all entries will be exhibited and available for sale from 10am until 6pm, providing the public access to a wide range of artists and styles, pieces for all decorating needs, and premiere quality for art collectors. Last year in Spartanburg, SC, this event sold 29 paintings worth $26,000.

The paintings will be juried by Portland, Oregon's Michael Schlicting, American Watercolor Society award winning artist and signature member, who will also select the top thirty paintings to receive the $10,000 in cash awards including a $1,000 Best in Show. The 30 award winning works along with an additional 40 selected paintings will be on display from May 6 through June 24 at the Coastal Discovery Museum, 100 William Hilton Parkway, Hilton Head Island, as part of the Chamber of Commerce's month-long Bravo! Celebrate the Arts.

The entire exhibit area at the Museum will be dedicated to hosting this prestigious art exhibition. The Coastal Discovery Museum is not only using the Jarvis Gallery on the main floor but also the main exhibit space upstairs to display juried paintings. While visitors will be enthralled by award-winning artwork, they will also enjoy spectacular views of Jarvis Creek and the salt marsh from its boardwalk area.

In addition to Art Market and the exhibition, there are several other events associated with the annual exhibition. Michael Schlicting, the exhibition juror, will have a display of his works, sign books that showcase his paintings, and greet the public at a Book Signing and Meet the Juror at Barnes & Noble on Hilton Head on Apr. 21 from noon-2pm. From Apr. 23 to 27, Schlicting will conduct a watermedia workshop, Going Beyond the Obvious, at the Greene Street Art Center in Beaufort, SC. The painting workshop is limited to 25 students, the fee is $295, and a few spaces are still available. He will also greet the public at the Firehouse Book Store during a Gallery Walk in Beaufort on Apr. 24, from 5-7pm. Nine galleries within the Beaufort Historic District will extend their evening hours and feature special exhibits while the Firehouse Book Store will serve refreshments, display works by the juror, and showcase coffee-table and "how-to" books that include his works. Moonshell Gallery on Hilton Head Island will also present a watermedia demonstration and lecture by Joyce Thompson and Martha Kornahrens, which is open to the public, free of charge, on May 5, from 3-5pm.

The South Carolina Watercolor Society (SCWS) is an active player in the arts community. Since 1977, SCWS has been promoting the artistic and professional interests of its more than 500 members and another 350 patrons as well as educating the public through visual arts programs including an annual exhibition, painting workshop, Art Market to promote the sale of original artwork, Regional Gatherings to present educational programs statewide, a video loan program, and community outreach activities. Special projects have included a curated exhibit at the South Carolina State Museum in 1977, South Carolina Collects Watercolors, which was a historical review of watercolor and the developments of the medium using works from South Carolina public and private collections. As part the South Carolina Arts Commission's Century Celebration project in 1999 and 2000, SCWS created the master to apprentice experience and presented another curated exhibit, 20/20 Vision, which presented contemporary watermedia artists in conjunction with student works from the SC Governor's School for the Arts.
