Hidell Brooks Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Jesus Moroles

Hidell Brooks Gallery in Charlotte, NC, is pleased to announce Jesus Moroles' second solo exhibition of New Granite Sculptures. This installation will run through Apr. 27, 2002.

One of America's most prominent sculptors, Jesus Moroles works exclusively in granite creating graceful forms from one of nature's hardest materials. Moroles uses granite from Texas, Canada, Vermont, India and China. He visits each quarry personally and selects the stones that "speak" to him. From there he returns to his warehouse size studio in Rockport, TX, were he first baths the granite in water then cuts, tears, grinds and polishes with diamond-bit saws to create visual harmony between man and nature. His sculptures range from monumental to small scale contrasting the naturally rough surface with the highly polished areas to create a balance between the textures.

His largest work to date is the Houston Police Officers Memorial, a 120 square foot public sculpture in memory of police officers slain in the line of duly. Moroles has been showing his work extensively since 1980. His work can be found in the collections of the National Museum of Art and the Smithsonian, in Washington, DC; the Museums of Fine Arts, in Santa Fe, Houston & Albuquerque; the Modern Museum of Art of Forth Worth, TX; Museum of Contemporary Art Osaka, Japan; and the Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte, among many others.
