Southern Pottery in Columbia, SC, Features Works by Mike Vatalaro

The Southern Pottery Workcenter and Gallery in Columbia, SC, presents the exhibit, Mike Vatalaro: Explorations into Function, on view from Apr. 15 through May 30, 2004.

The gallery will feature Vatalaro' s clay work with a focus on his wheel thrown, altered and high fired stoneware pottery. Included will be lidded forms, vases, platters, bowls and cups. Vatalaro's interest in geometric form, layered color and surface embellishment is integrated into his functional clay work. The gallery will present over 50 new pieces of work.

Vatalaro's work has been in over 100 exhibitions around the country and overseas. He has worked as an invited artist at the International Ceramic Workshop in Tokoname Japan and the Penland School of Crafts in NC. Twice Vatalaro has received the South Carolina Artist Fellowship. His work is in the permanent collection of the Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC, the South Carolina State Museum and the South Carolina State Art Collection in Columbia, among others.

Vatalaro received his Masters of Art Degree from Alfred University in New York and has been head of ceramics at Clemson University since 1976.
