TwoArtChicks in Greensboro, NC, Host Arts Law Clinic

The North Carolina Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, the United Arts Council of Greensboro and TwoArtChicks will sponsor a free Arts Law Clinic on May 5, 2004, from 10am - 6pm at TwoArtChicks in Greensboro, NC.

The Arts Law Clinic will provide the opportunity for artists and representatives of arts organizations to have free half-hour consultations with an attorney that works in the field of arts law. Appointments are open to all arts organizations and individual artists regardless of art discipline. Interested artists and arts organization representatives can sign up to schedule their consultation by calling TwoArtChicks at 336/273-9885.

The North Carolina Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts is a statewide, non-profit organization; its mission is to be a link between the arts and the legal community. Typical legal issues facing artists and arts organizations include: a variety of copyright issues, contract issues for commissioning artwork, joint ownership issues when multiple artists work on a project, and board management issues for non-profit organizations.

The consulting attorney, Daniel Ellison, is Executive Director of the North Carolina Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts. He has nearly 20 years experience working with artists and arts organizations. He also serves on the board of the Durham Arts Council and the North Carolina Central University Art Museum. He is a frequent speaker on art and museum law topics and writes a monthly legal issues column for the Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC) newsletter. Additionally, Ellison developed "Durham Arts Place" – a building in downtown Durham, NC, that he renovated seven years ago for affordable artist studio spaces.

The United Arts Council's mission is to "champion the Arts for everyone in our community." The UAC fulfills this mission by supporting over 50 individual artists, arts organizations and educators annually with financial support and advocacy. Arts agencies supported by the UAC record attendance and participation of more than 650,000 people throughout our community. For more information, visit (www.uacgreensboro.org).
