Hand and Hand Gallery in Flat Rock, NC, Features West African Inspired Works

An exhibition of artwork originating from and inspired by the West African country of Niger entitled, West Africa: Inspirations, Here and There, will be held at Hand and Hand Gallery in Flat Rock, NC, beginning Apr. 15 and continues through May 31, 2005.

Textile, leather, wood, silver and clay items created by artisans in Niger and collected there will be exhibited. A selection of batiks from Niger will be available for purchase. These batiks are created by a cooperative of artists at the Musee National du Niger in Niamey and feature a wide array of animals and village themes in vivid colors. Items include hangings and tablecloth sets.

Artwork inspired by the people, landscape and art of Niger will be exhibited by Elizabeth Voorhees, Molly Sharp and David Voorhees. Liz's black & white and color photography of the people of the Bonkoukou region capture their enduring strength in a harsh landscape. David's pottery will explore the more primal use of clay as he witnessed in Niger. Molly's inspiration for her jewelry pieces comes from the Tuareg craftsmen so widely acclaimed for their silver work in Niger.

This exhibit is the result of a recent trip to Niger by David Voorhees to visit his daughter, Liz, a Peace Corps Volunteer serving in the village of Ilakitan. Liz's main village project was a community garden program with the creation of a large fenced garden with two irrigation wells. The goal of the project was food stability and variety to supplement their primary diet of millet. Hand and Hand Gallery's West African Bowl Project provided funding for the community garden through the sales of handmade bowls created by David and Molly. A full report on the project and Ilakitan's community garden will be presented as part of the exhibit with a few more bowls still available.
