South Carolina Watercolor Society Brings Annual Exhibition to Columbia, SC - With Major Impact

The South Carolina Watercolor Society (SCWS), the largest statewide visual arts guild, brings its annual membership exhibition to Columbia, SC, and much more. The SCWS 29th Annual Exhibition - Watermedia Plus, will be on display at City Art in Columbia from Apr. 28 through July 21, 2006. The exhibition opens on Apr. 28, during Artista Vista - Art Night, an annual gallery walk and sale of fine art in the historic Congaree Vista area in Columbia, from 5-9pm and on Apr. 29, Artista Vista - Art Day, from 10am-5pm. SCWS is also working with 10 other galleries and spaces in the Vista presenting 10 exhibitions of works by members of the Society.

Martha Mayberry, Curator at the Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte, NC, was the juror for Watermedia Plus, where artists vie for $10,000 in awards going to the top thirty paintings in the exhibition. Mayberry selected 53 works for the exhibition. This premiere exhibit draws artists from across the state and features a variety of work from representational to abstract. The main element that links this exhibit is the use of watermedia - and the organization embraces one of the broadest interpretations for the use of this medium nationally and thus allows artists more creative freedom.

This year, the SCWS exhibit opens as part of the annual Artista Vista weekend, which is a gallery walk and sale of fine art throughout the historic Congaree Vista. There's a plethora of watermedia art being offered as 10 of the 19 participating galleries and businesses will feature SCWS artists and many of the exhibits remain on display longer than the two-day event.

Artista Vista participants featuring SCWS artists include: Cameo Fine Art will be presenting works by Trish Arnold, Al Beyer, Mary Alice Lockhart, and Barbara Yon, on view from Apr. 28 through May 12, 2006; The Gallery at Nonnah's will feature works by Jennie Branham, Ingrid Carson, Bonnie Goldberg, and Michel McNinch; I. Pickney Simmons Gallery will feature works by Jane Todd Butcher, Vickie Ebbers, Wyn Foland, Donna Gore, Lynn Greer, and Suzanne Zoole, from Apr. 28 through May 26, 2006; Jay Takach Interiors will be presenting works by Arnold Carrouth, Lynda English, Jenny Hamilton, and Ann Heard, from Apr. 14 through May 19, 2006; McCrory Gallery will offer the exhibit, Impressions of Colour, featuring works by Lori Starnes, Larry Mauldin, and Liz Smith-Cox, on view from Apr. 2 - 30, 2006; M. Craig & Co. features works by Chris Carlsson, Dale Cochran, Rosemary Moore, Lori Starnes, and Esther Melton, from Apr. 14 through May 12, 2006; Paul D. Sloan Interiors will present works by Carole Tinsley, Carol Ann Rose, Eileen Nichols, Cynthia Wilson, from Apr. 27 through May 13, 2006; and Vista Studios/Gallery 80808 presents the exhibit, Blues on Lady Street, featuring works by JoAnne Anderson, Rose Metz, Meg McLean, and Esther Melton, from Apr. 21 through May 9, 2006. See some images by some of these artists here.

Several events are planned for the exhibition's opening weekend including: on Apr. 28 at 9:30pm, the President's Dutch Treat Dessert at Nonnah's on Gervais St.; on Apr. 29 at 11:30am, is the SCWS annual Membership Meeting at the Columbia Convention Center; from 1-3pm is the Awards Luncheon at the Convention Center (reservations are required); and at 4pm, there will be a slide lecture program offered at the Columbia Museum of Art by the SCWS workshop instructor, Marilyn Hughey Phillis, AWS/NWS (there is a $5 museum admission fee for non-Columbia Museum members). The events conclude with the exhibition's opening at City Art from 5:30- 7:30pm.

In addition to these events, SCWS is hosting a painting workshop, Abstract Watermedia by Marilyn Hughey Phillis, taking place from Apr. 24 - 28, 2006, at the Columbia Museum of Art. The fee is $375 and space is still available.

Major project support was contributed by the City of Columbia Accommodations Tax, Cultural Council of Lexington and Richland Counties, John and Susan Bennett Memorial Art Fund, Milliken Foundation, SC Arts Commission which received support for the National Endowment for the Arts, and many other businesses and individual donors.

The South Carolina Watercolor Society (SCWS), the largest statewide visual arts guild, nurtures and promotes South Carolina artists by providing exhibition opportunities and educational programs. They also provide the public with many quality art experiences through exhibits and a variety of art programs for all ages.
