Charleston Crafts in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Kelly Thiel

Charleston Crafts Gallery in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, Meditation, featuring works by Folly Beach, SC, potter Kelly Thiel, on view through Apr. 30, 2007.

Thiel's new series combines form and function at a high level. Beautifully scaled and balanced stoneware pieces range from small cups and bowls to large vessels. Glazed in warm earth tones they are detailed with dark lines and usually include a focal point, often bright red, but sometimes a soothing blue. Of this series Thiel says, "These are my 'quiet vessels.' I want people to feel really peaceful and centered when they look at or use these pieces."

Born in Georgia, Thiel spent her youth in Virginia, gaining a degree in design from Virginia Tech. In 1999, she was introduced to clay during a class at the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston. She has studied at many intensive workshops since, with Tom Coleman, David Crane and Peter VandenBerge among others. She will continue learning with a workshop at Arrowmont this summer. Thiel uses all forms of clay manipulation and uses a wide range of glazes to enhance her sculptures and vessels.

Thiel and her husband love to travel. She is often inspired by things seen or experienced in other places and cultures. A recent series explored flamingo dancers that she saw in Spain. In addition to exhibiting the Meditation series at Charleston Crafts Gallery, she currently has sculptures at Carolina Clay Gallery, Johns Island, SC, and smoke fired vessels at the South Carolina Artisan's Center, Walterboro, SC.

A busy show season this year will include The Sanford Pottery Festival, The Piccolo Spoleto Crafts Show, Myrtle Beach's Art in the Park, and The Seawall Art Show in Portsmouth, VA. Thiel's most recent award is an honorable mention for her entry into the Palmetto Hands Fine Craft Exhibit in North Charleston, SC.

Charleston Crafts Gallery is a co-op gallery, exhibiting the members work in a variety of media.
