City of Charleston in Charleston, SC, Offers Works by Sally Bruce M. Boone

The City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs will present the exhibition, Internal Journey, featuring works of acrylic on canvas by Mt. Pleasant, SC, artist, Sally Bruce M. Boone. The exhibit will take place in the City Gallery at the historic Dock Street Theatre in downtown Charleston, SC, from Apr. 11 through May 11, 2007.

Boone was born in Atlanta, GA, to a family that would grow to six. Her mother is a professional artist and her father is a chemical engineer. Boone's father always brought home loads of brown packing paper for his artistic family, so there was never a shortage of paper to draw and paint on. During her teenage angst years her parents sent her for formal art lessons.

Boone received a BA in Fine Arts from the University of the South. For several years she pursued her love of horses. After ten years of horses, she moved back to Mt. Pleasant, SC. While living in Mt. Pleasant, she received many suggestions to pursue her art. She was quite hesitant, but found an art therapy course which would allow her to create art without pressure. Boone jumped at the suggestions, and a year later had a studio in her garage with mosquitoes, sweat, and all that came with a hot summer. She was elated and her brushes could not stop moving. Boone has not exhibited any work since college.

Boone comments on her work: "The internal journey is a process of understanding my emotions through my art. The collages, self-portraits, and abstracts reflect a determination to discover what lies at the very heart of myself. They reflect the process of layer upon layer of paint being drawn where the subconscious takes me. The subconscious guides the work often leading me down a path of realization that I did not know needed to be traversed. My works of art are very physical. Paints are pushed and pulled, and often painted over again and again only to be scraped away. They are a release of energy. They are my marathon. I must push and pull the issues within my being in order to resolve a piece. When I am done, I am exhausted."
