COCO VIVO in Charleston SC, Features Works by Roger Milinowski and Tony VanHasselt

The Coastal Divide is a collaborative show of works by plein air oil painter Roger Milinowski and watercolorist Tony VanHasselt, featuring coastal paintings of the Eastern Seaboard at COCO VIVO in Charleston, SC. The show will be on view through May 1, 2007. The exhibit is the artists' true interpretation of coastal landscapes on canvas and paper of the low country and the majestic Maine Coast.

Roger Milinowski's newest body of work is a realistic representation of nature's true palette of color. His coastal compositions capture the light and movement of waves on a shimmering ocean or the quiet solitude of a lonely boathouse left for a bygone era. His signature skies grab a brief passage of time in motion.

Milinowski is a coastal plein air painter born in 1946. He was influenced by his early years on the shores of the Hudson River. Educated in visual arts and Industrial Design he has worked with prestigious design firms as a designer, illustrator and art director. His oil paintings are in private and corporate collections in the US and Abroad.

Tony VanHasselt's watercolors are done with clear, deft strokes in an impressionistic style that tell a visual story with emphasis on strong patterns of light and shade. Be it a rural landscape, a coastal view or scenes from some distant painters paradise, the viewer will share in its excitement.

VanHasselt grew up in Holland and worked in the display ad and graphic design profession prior to his arrival to the United States. Furthering his education in New York, he studied under Frank Reilly, a popular teacher at the NY Art Students League. Later, his workshop mentors became well known watercolorists such as John Pike, Edgar A Whitney, Robert E. Wood, Tom Hill, Milford Zornes and Rex Brandt.

VanHasselt's teaching career began at the Philbrook Museum in Tulsa Oklahoma. He has been guest instructor at West Texas State University and a faculty member of the University of Oklahoma's International training programs.

VanHasselt is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, participated in National shows and has won awards in State and regional exhibits. Three of his paintings are included in the Masterworks Bermudian Collection in Bermuda. His work has been featured in magazines such as Southwest Art and American Artist, on the covers of Artist Magazines and Watercolor Magic as well in numerous books.

VanHasselt first wrote A Studio Visit, followed by Outdoor Watercolor Workshop and co-authored Painting with the White of Your Paper and The Watercolor Fix-it Book. Painting in exclusively watercolor, VanHasselt teaches landscape painting workshops in this country and abroad. He is a member of the Maine Art Gallery, The Boothbay region Art Foundation and the Kennebec Valley Art Association.

COCO VIVO is a life style gallery that interior designers Mary Phelps and Kate Tackett have taken great effort to perfect. Every aspect of this show reflects their philosophy of relaxed living. Each painting will bring you back to a more nostalgic time and place, taking you beyond the clutter of today's busy lifestyle.
