The Cheryl Newby Gallery in Pawleys Island, SC, will feature the works of SC artist Alex Powers in a one-man show entitled, Hearts do in the Face Rest...Alex Powers and the Human Form, on view from Apr. 5 - 26, 2008.

Powers, who grew up in Coburn, VA, attended the Art Students League in New York and the Cape School of Art in Provincetown, MA. Among the many national and regional awards he has won for his paintings is the prestigious American Watercolor Society Gold Medal which was presented to him in 1997. Since 1970 Powers has been a professional artist and teacher, and is one of the most sought-after watercolor teachers in the country. The author of "Painting in Watercolors, A Design Approach" published by Watson-Guptill, he has taught workshops from Santa Fe, to St. Louis, and from Vancouver to Toronto.

Powers' paintings have been exhibited in Australia, China, Taiwan, and throughout the United States. As one of the founding teachers of the nationally acclaimed program of instruction in the visual arts at Springmaid Beach near Myrtle Beach, SC, Powers has taught 52 workshops there since 1982.

Hearts do in the Face Rest...Alex Powers and the Human Form is an exhibition of fifteen paintings by Powers which focus on human emotions. Working in gouache, charcoal, pastel, and sometimes employing collage, he masterfully reveals the gamut of feelings written upon the human face. A lifetime lover of music, theater, poetry, and literature, Powers often employs a unique graphic language process in his paintings - a combination of painting, drawing, and writing which he melds into exciting and thought provoking works.
