April Issue 2008

Second Columbia Open Studios Takes Place May 3 & 4, 2008. in Columbia, SC

Columbia Open Studios 2008 will take place on Sat., May 3 and Sun., May 4. For the event, more than 60 artists from the city of Columbia, SC, and Lexington and Richland counties will open their studio to the public from 10am-6pm on Sat., and noon-6pm on Sun.

Last year, more than 60 Columbia area artists participated in the first Columbia Open Studios, and thousands of visitors came to see their art. The event was then part of the first Columbia Festival of the Arts. The festival won't take place this year but might return in 2009. The festival board decided, however, that Open Studios, perhaps last year's festival most successful event, should go on regardless in 2008.

As of Mar. 12, 2008, the following artists had committed to participating in Columbia Open Studios 2008: Sylvia Ady-Potts, Christy Aitken, Margaret Arial, Eileen Blyth, Jean Bourque, Ethel Brody, Nancy K. Butterworth, Pat Callahan, Sandra Carr, Ingrid Carson, Jeremy Carter, Anastasia Chernoff, Stephen Chesley, Ruth Cockrell, Vicki Corley, Heidi Darr-Hope, Colin Dodd, Porter O'Brien Dodd, Jeff Donovan, Clark Ellefson, Claire Farrell, Alejandro Garcia, Tyrone Geter, Diane Gilbert, Mary Gilkerson, Pat Gilmartin, Jessica Glenn, Mac Arthur Goodwin, Paul Grant, Steve Hewitt, Lucinda Howe, Ann Hubbard, Howard Hunt, Yoko Iwanaga, Judy Bolton Jarrett, Robin Jones, Michele Kingery, Deanna Leamon, Alicia Leek, Susan Lenz, Peter Lenzo, Sharon Licata, Robert Lyon, M. Sue Martin, Laurie McIntosh, Michel McNinch, John Monteith, Paul Moore, Marcelo Novo, One Eared Cow Glassblowers (Tommy Lockart & Mark Woodham), Pat Parise, Jerry Phillips, Kala Pullen, Carolyn Ramsay, Virginia Scotchie, Rob Shaw, Laura Spong, Pam Steele, Keith Tolen, Ben Truesdale, Edward Whitmer, Tuula Ihamäki-Widdifield, Mike Williams, David Yaghjian and Don Zurlo.

Columbia Open Studios 2008 wants to give artists an opportunity to engage the public directly and show their art as well as their creative processes. The organization hopes this will create new marketing opportunities for artists. The event also aims to provide easy access for the community to the visual arts and expose the public to the wealth of fine artists in Columbia and Richland and Lexington counties. This, the organizers hope, will educate people about the process of making art and create a dialogue between artists and the public. By giving people a chance to peek into artists' studios, get a sense of how they work and interact directly with artists, Open Studios hopes to generate excitement about area artists among seasoned collectors and first-time buyers alike.

Like last year, the event's first year, the Open Studios organization will produce a special tabloid publication listing participating artists and their contact information, images of their work, maps of the area and directions to the artists' studios. The Open Studios tabloid will be distributed with Columbia's The State newspaper and through art institutions across the state. Copies of the tabloid can be ordered by calling 803/238-2351 or e-mailing to (wroefs@sc.rr.com). During the Open Studios weekend, road signs will further direct the public to artists' studios.
