Gregg Museum of Art & Design in Raleigh, NC, Features Jugtown Pottery

The Gregg Museum of Art & Design at NC State University in Raleigh, NC, is presenting the exhibit, Pamela and Vernon Owens: Potters of Jugtown, on view through July 6, 2008.

This exhibition will celebrate the 25th anniversary of Pam and Vernon Owens' ownership of the Jugtown Pottery. The couple acquired the pottery in 1983 from Country Roads, Inc. The New England based non-profit bought the pottery in 1968. Nancy Sweezy trained as a studio potter, joined Vernon Owens and his brother Bobby Owens. This team took the pottery to new levels of skill, technique and production. Apprenticeships were also encouraged and Pamela Lorette came to Jugtown in 1977 from New Hampshire. She married Vernon in 1983. Since that time the family has consistently produced some of the finest earthen- and stoneware made in the United States. Approximately 120 pieces produced during the past 25 years will be exhibited in celebration of this important anniversary.

An illustrated exhibition catalogue, funded privately by a group of donors and the Friends of the Gregg Publication Fund, will be available with essays by Isobel Karl of the High Mowing School and Charlotte V. Brown, Director of the Gregg. Photography for the catalog is by Travis Owens.
