POP Open Studio Tour in Upstate SC Takes Place May 10 & 11, 2008

The first open studio art tour for Pickens, Oconee and Pendleton Counties in SC, has been organized for May 10 and 11, 2008, featuring more than thirty accomplished artists demonstrating their crafts and selling finished pieces of art.

Named "POP" for the three areas, the studio art tour is modeled after the successful Greenville Studio Tour. Like Greenville's tour, the POP Open Studio Tour will offer the public an opportunity to visit artists in their working studios, where the artistic process will be demonstrated. The artists and their studios have been juried to ensure quality work and appropriate studio venues. A great variety of original work will be featured, including art from glass artists, jewelers, printmakers, furniture makers, weavers, ironworkers and wood carvers and turners. Painters, sculptors, photographers and quilters will also be participating. All artists will include works for sale to the public.

The tour will be held Sat., May 10 from 10am-6pm and Sun., May 11 from noon-6pm. Attendees will be able to pick up a map featuring all the artists' locations at any of the stops along the tour.

A preview exhibition will be held at the Blue Ridge Art Center's Gallery in Seneca, SC, with one example of work from each of the 34 participating artists featured. The exhibit will be on view from May 2 through the following week, ending with the studio tour completion on May 11. In conjunction, many galleries throughout Pickens and Oconee counties and Pendleton will host educational forums and feature special exhibits.

The POP tour will promote the tri-county area of Pickens, Oconee and Anderson counties as a tourist destination. While bringing art to the people, it will also bring people directly into the artistic process by involving them in the artists' studios.

Financial support for the POP Open Studio Tour has been received from the Oconee County Arts and Historical Commission and the Heritage Corridor SC Parks, Recreation and Tourism.

The Blue Ridge Arts Council is the organization center for the POP Open Studio Tour. Tickets are available at the office located at 111 East South Second Street in Seneca.
