South Carolina Botanical Garden in Clemson, SC, Offers Ongoing Exhibits

The Featured Artists Gallery, located in the Fran Hanson Discovery Center on the grounds of the South Carolina Botanical Garden at Clemson University in Clemson, SC, has reopened as a gallery featuring a diverse collection of art and heritage crafts by local artists. To launch the new focus, the gallery currently features six artists who live in the Upstate and draw inspiration for their works from the natural materials and beauty found in Upstate South Carolina. The gallery will include at least one new artist each month, focusing on artwork inspired by the nature of the Upstate.

"We wanted to feature the amazing art being created in the Upstate, as well as display the heritage crafts from this area," said Todd Steadman, Associate Director of the SC Botanical Garden. "This new gallery will connect people with nature and culture, showcasing how the beauty of places like the Botanical Garden influences artists."

The artists and work currently on display include: Nancy Basket kudzu paper art and handcrafted baskets; Sue Figliola pastels and colored-pencil drawings; Sue Grier functional and sculptural ceramics; Edward Pivorun nature photography; Jo Ann Taylor acrylic and watercolor floral paintings; and Susan Watson portrait and still life oil paintings.

"I was thrilled at the participation of our first six artists," says Deana Baker, chair of the Garden's Art Selection Committee. "We wanted to showcase a variety of artistic media and styles, as well as showcase some of the Upstate's most talented artists. This exhibit perfectly achieved our goals."

In addition to the Featured Artist Gallery, the Discovery Center houses a permanent collection of work by the late Elizabeth Belser Fuller. Spanning a 50-year period, this incredible collection includes pieces from Fuller's lifetime of painting and drawing in watercolors, oil, mixed media, and pen and ink.

Most of the artwork in the Featured Artists Gallery is available for sale, with proceeds benefiting the South Carolina Botanical Garden.

The South Carolina Botanical Garden is located on the Clemson University campus at the intersection of Highway 76 and Perimeter Road. The Garden encompasses 295 acres of display gardens, nature trails, woodlands and streams, and is open year-round from dawn to dusk, free of charge. The Garden is partially supported by the state of South Carolina via Clemson University, but relies on private funding, memberships and proceeds from events and sales to continue operations.
