Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, Offers Works by Charles Chrisco

Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, is presenting an exhibit of works by acclaimed raku artist Charles Chrisco, on view through Apr. 29, 2009.

The art of raku is said to have originated back in sixteenth century Japan by a Korean immigrant who had settled in Kyoto and married a Japanese woman. Translated, raku means great happiness, a title which was bestowed on the early wares by the reigning ruler of Japan.

Chrisco knows well the pleasures of raku. He was born and raised in the Seagrove/Jugtown area of North Carolina, an area, which has long been recognized for its extensive pottery heritage. He studied pottery at Montgomery Technical Institute in Troy, NC, and the Sawtooth Center For Visual Design in Winston-Salem, NC. He has been working with raku since 1981, receiving numerous Best In Show and First Place awards from all over the country.

Included in this exhibition are Chrisco's signature red, black and white vessels as well as a few of his rare and stunning pots, which have been fired with 24 karat gold. Gallery owner Ginny Lassiter said, 'I am in awe of this work. The design, the craft - it's deceptively simple. Only a highly skilled artist could create pieces like these."

The show consists of more than 20 pieces. Collectors and art lovers in other areas of the country can view many of the Chrisco pots, vessels and platters online at the gallery's MySpace page at (www.myspace.com/sunsetrivermarketplace).

Sunset River Marketplace is an eclectic 10,000 square-foot gallery that features paintings, pottery, artisan-crafted jewelry, hand-blown glass, turned wood, metalworks and more by some of the finest artists in the Carolinas. Housed at the back of the gallery are a classroom, a custom framing center and a pottery studio complete with two kilns.
