Slightly off Center, Uptown Folly Opens in April in Folly Beach, SC

Slightly off Center, Uptown Folly is a new arts venue announcing its grand opening on Apr. 1, 2010. The gallery/gift shop is located at 103 W. Erie Street on Folly Beach, SC, at the corner of W. Erie and Center Street, with an Open-air Market opening onto Center Street.  The gallery/gift shop features an art and gift gallery, tea room which sells and serves international, award winning teas, custom frame shop, and art classes for children.

The Open-air Market which will offer a variety of local, hand-made arts, organic vegetables and fruits, fresh flowers all sold from permanent booths in a tropical garden setting right in the heart of Folly Beach.

The owners and brainchildren behind the concept are Sherry Browne, Anne Warner, and Jane Word who are hoping to fill a niche that has not yet been fulfilled on Folly Beach. They are striving to make the market a place where emerging, under-represented, or perhaps unknown artists can have a venue to sell and showcase their work to an open audience of thousands every day, in an eclectic and fresh atmosphere with an emphasis on high quality artistic and creative works.

Jane Word, a Folly Beach resident, is a graduate of the University of Tennessee with a BS in Biology. After living in Toronto and Chicago for the last 20 years, she moved to Folly Beach to continue her artistic career, creating organically based works inspired by her years as a scientist. She is the sculptor of the trio.

Anne Warner, a Folly Beach resident previously of Charleston, SC, is a graduate of the University of Kentucky and Ursuline College in Ohio, and is an ASID designer. With her keen eye for design she is the one who searches out and finds the most unique and wonderful gifts that the gift shop will offer.

Sherry Browne is a graduate of Agnes Scott College in Georgia, after which she began a career as a graphic artist but is now known for her amazing paper art. She has owned and operated Studio Open on Folly Beach for the past 9 years, an art gallery and studio which will merge into Slightly off Center to establish a permanent artistic presence on Folly Beach.

The three women really hope to add a missing dimension to Folly's unique and charming atmosphere by offering a multi-purpose venue where locals and tourists alike can come peruse through some of the newest and best gifts and art that Charleston has to offer.
