Arts Center of Henderson Co. in Hendersonville, NC, Features Blackwell Collection

The Arts Center of Henderson County, in Hendersonville, NC, is holding a series of special events beginning with an outdoor event consisting of an open-air demonstration by Clyde Jones, a self-taught artist from Bynum, NC. Using only his imagination, raw wood and a chainsaw, Jones will create some of his whimsical, "critters" with local children in the First Citizens Bank Main Street Courtyard on May 18, from 10am-2pm.

The Blackwell Collection - Outsider/Folk Art Exhibition, will be on view in the Center's gallery from May 18 through July 27. The exhibit will feature a collection of American outsider/folk art from the Immaculate Consumption Folk Art Foundation, a non-profit organization created by Scott & Caroline Blackwell of Flat Rock, NC, who have been collecting art pieces since early 1990's. The Foundation is devoted to preserving this work and supporting its creators: "Our mission is simple: to give support, aid, encouragement and exposure to the self-taught artists working in the American folk art tradition."

The collection consists of contemporary American self-taught art that exemplifies raw, native talent. In the tradition and spirit of outsider art - we plan to carry the exhibition to several audiences that might not otherwise have the opportunity to experience this innovative and powerful expression of wide range individuals from a variety of backgrounds.

In conjunction with the exhibition Dr. B. Pfingstag is presenting a series of color slide presentations relating to the exhibition. He will also lead an interactive outreach program to four residential, rehabilitation facilities exposing the audiences to an alternative form of visual expression, encouraging them to participate in the beneficial aspect of a creative process: a spontaneous psychic flow from brain to paper. On May 24, from 7-8pm, Dr. Pfingstag will present a color slide lecture entitled, Inside Outsider. Refreshments and a discussion will follow the slide lecture.

The program is funded in part by a grassroots grant from the North Carolina Arts Council and The Immaculate Consumption Folk Art Foundation. Underwritten by Mountain Lore Bookstore.
