Coleman Fine Art in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Jan Pawlowski

Jan Pawlowski

Coleman Fine Art in Charleston, SC, will feature the most treasured gardens of the Holy City as they come to life on the canvases of plein-air impressionist, Jan Pawlowski. The exhibition, The Gardens of Charleston: New Oil Paintings by Jan Pawlowski, will be on view from May 30 through June 30, 2003.

Raised and trained in Poland, Pawlowski now resides in Nantucket. He travels the coast painting in plein-air as the day unfolds. The artist visits the Lowcountry each spring and has the capability to produce unforgettable images of the gardens in Charleston.

One of Pawlowski's most distinguishing trademarks is his ability to capture the light and color of Charleston.  As a result, the artist visits Charleston when the city is full of new life and spring buds. Through his richly textured canvases, his floral paintings instill a sense of clarity, freshness, and renewal.

Pawlowski prefers to work in the early morning, when the air is crisp and the birds are singing, capturing a feeling of extra senses on his canvas. He paints very quickly before the light and shadows have a chance to change; applying paint with a brush, pallet knife or finger. "Only Nature can bring truth to the canvas," says Pawlowski, "one learns technique in school, but one learns 'truth' from Nature."
