E. S. Lawrence Gallery Features Works of Mat Barber Kennedy

The E. S. Lawrence Gallery in Charleston, SC, will host an exhibit of works by artist Mat Barber Kennedy. Kennedy's show entitled, Images of Charleston, will be on display at the gallery from May 10 through June 10, 2003.

Kennedy, who currently resides in Chicago, is a London-born architect whose compelling work has garnered recognition on both sides of the Atlantic. He is a member of the prestigious Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolors and the Federation of British Artists. Kennedy's "life drawings for buildings" consist of pencil, pen, ink, colored pencils, watercolor, collage elements, and different textures of paper. "I want my paintings to capture moments in the lives of ordinary buildings growing old with their inhabitants. The goal is to find and reveal something of the unique spirit of the place, in much the same way as a portrait reveals an individual", writes Kennedy. Approximately 40 pieces of Kennedy's art will be on view - both originals and prints.

Patrick Ryan, gallery director, says, "Mat's distinctive concept and inimitable style have provided renderings of Charleston that simultaneously captivate and resonate. Each of his pieces warrants a long and thoughtful look. He has crafted his paintings from copious notes and sketches done over several visits to Charleston in the last two years. His perspective is, indeed, unique, and the works in this show rank in quality with some of his outstanding prior work, done in places as varied as India, Brazil, France, and Mexico."

E. S. Lawrence has a gallery in Aspen, Colorado, and opened its Charleston location in 1999.
