Waterfront Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Joann Davis, Welcomes Zernie Smith & More

Joann Davis

Joann Davis is the featured artist for the month of May, 2003, at Waterfront Gallery in Charleston, SC. The exhibit titled Lowcountry Memories represents her love of the coastal marshes, birds, and beaches around Charleston. Davis' use of waterbased ink in her work makes a unique and interesting presentation. In many of her works, she uses sand and sea water to give her work a very distinct appearance different from the average painting. Her work has a depth and three dimensional feel due to her unique use of the medium, whether working in a realistic or abstract manner.

Coming from an artistic family, Davis' love of art began at an early age. In 1970, she decided to pursue this love with formal study through art classes and workshops. Davis has studied with nationally known artist; Alex Powers, Joan Rothemel, Zoltan Szabo, Virginia Cobb, Marilyn Hughey Phillis and Maxine Masterfield.

Davis has won many awards for her work, including the Hal P. Moore Award in the SC Watercolor Society Show, Best in Show at the First Federal of Charleston Show, as well as a First Place Award, The Grumbacher Silver Medallion and Second Place at the Beaufort Water Festival, Second Place at the Atalaya Art Festival, Murrells Inlet, First Place Awards at the Walterboro Rice Festival, as well as numerous other awards over the years. Davis has exhibited her work in shows in Connecticut, Virginia, North and South Carolina, Florida, and Alabama, as well as on the Island of Bermuda. Her work hangs in corporate collections; including the Houston Children's Hospital, Blue Ribbon Rice Corporate Offices, Roper Hospital, Colleton Regional Hospital, and the Colleton County Library, as well as in many private collections around the world.

Davis has been a member of Waterfront Gallery, one of the premier artist-owned galleries in the historic district of Charleston, since its conception in 1995.

On Sat., May 3, from 11am-4pm the artists of Waterfront Gallery will be in the gallery demonstrating and discussing their work. This is a great opportunity to meet the artists and see how they each create their unique style of artwork. Each artist will be set up in their respective display areas throughout the gallery and the public is encouraged to walk through the gallery and see our 18 artists "in action". There will be demonstrations in watercolor, oil, pastel, and mixed media. You will see the artists working from start to completion on various pieces and learn how they choose their subject matter, where they find inspiration, how they initially lay in the basics for the start of paintings and about various paints, brushes, painting surfaces and other materials. You will enjoy meeting the artists and seeing how they create their "stuff' in this casual, and fun atmosphere. There will be light refreshments for those in attendance.
