Ann Long Fine Art in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Ben Long

From May 7 through June 30, 2004, Ann Long Fine Art in Charleston, SC, will present an exhibition of works from Fresco by Ben Long. The exhibition will focus on the drawings and the studies for the Morganton Fresco found in the Comma Theater, in Morganton, NC. The fresco depicts images of the Nine Muses from Greek Mythology, expressed through a nuanced and classical approach to the human figure. Dramatic figure studies, detailed head drawings and images of the fresco in progress can be viewed on our website (www.annlongfineart.com).

Hailing froth North Carolina, Ben Long is grandson to noted artist McKendree Long. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before studying in New York with Robert Beverly Hale and Frank Mason at the Art Students League.

While serving in Viet Nam, Long was on the combat art unit; and his combat drawings can be found in the Smithsonian Institute. After Viet Nam, Long traveled to Florence, Italy and apprenticed himself to Pietro Annigoni for eight years, working beside him in fresco work. After completing several frescos in Italy, including the only painting by a non-Italian at the abbey of Montecassino, Long brought his fresco talent to America.

Since 1978, Long has completed more than 20 frescoes in North Carolina. Many can be found in churches, banking institutions and now performing arts centers. The artist now divides his time between Europe and Asheville, NC, where he recently has founded the Fine Arts League of Asheville, a school designed for the needs of the classically trained artist.
