Gallery WDO in Charlotte, NC, Offers Works by Cristina Cordova

Gallery WDO in Charlotte, NC, is presenting the exhibit, Mitomemoria, featuring works by Cristina Cordova through June 5, 2004.

Cordova is currently artist in residence at the Penland School of Crafts. She recently was awarded a North C arolina Artists Grant. The 28 year artist studied in her native Puerto Rico and at Alfred University, Alfred, New York.

Cordova's sensitive and haunting ceramic and resin figurative sculptures have won her high critical praise and a loyal following. This is her first major show in Charlotte.

"The figure is the constant vehicle in my search for a presence," says Cordova. "The recombination of elements that resonate with a personal sense of gender, culture and time give place to compositions that become alternate means of immersion into reality. One where the boundaries between the sensorial and psychological become obscured and where a deeper language rooted in intuition and archived experience dictates paradigms. It is through these objects that I investigate and begin to grasp the indeterminate and ever-changing aspects that make us human."

Cordova received a BA from the Colegio de Agricultura y Artes Mecanicas, Mayaguez, Puerto Rico and an MFA from NY State College of Ceramics, Alfred University, Alfred, NY. She has taught ceramics at Alfred University and at the Penland School of Crafts.

Cordova's works have been exhibited in Puerto Rico, NY, IL, PA, ME, and NC.
