Fish or Cut Bait Gallery on Edisto Island, SC, Features Works by Philip Powell and Cindy Saad

The new Mothers Are Angels exhibit will begin at Fish or Cut Bait Gallery on Edisto Island, SC, on May 7, the day before Mother's Day and will feature two Columbia, SC, artists, Philip Powell and Cindy Saad. The exhibit will run through May 25, 2005.

"We see it as a special way to celebrate and honor our mothers, who are the angels in our lives," said Brailsford Foster, owner of the gallery. "The two artists that we are featuring will be sharing their unique and wonderful creations with our visitors, and while their talents and styles are very different, they both demonstrate that art can be an exciting and often healing way of pursuing your dreams."

Philip Powell

Philip Powell, who has Down syndrome, has always enjoyed doing artwork, but began pursuing it in earnest after a dear family friend became ill with leukemia. Wanting to lift her spirits, he painted his first angel as a gift to her because he believes them to be creatures who can help you if you have a problem. She was so touched by his gesture and impressed by his potential that she encouraged him to continue to make use of his talents, and he has been doing so ever since.

Powell is now 18 years old, and his paintings have been featured in several shows. His first success came at the Trinity Bazaar, where all 37 of his angel paintings sold quickly. His mother, Alice Powell, hopes his painting will provide he son with something he can do for the rest of his life. She says he recently said that he doesn't read well or talk well, but "he can do art." In April, Powell presented his work at the annual South Carolina Down Syndrome Conference, and his mother was very excited about that opportunity.

"We hope his participation in the conference will offer encouragement to the parents of younger children who have Down Syndrome," Alice Powell said.

Cindy Saad

Cindy Saad is another artist who has used her artistic abilities to help her overcome health challenges. She is primarily a self-taught artist whose initial work was in painting and photography. A breast cancer survivor, Saad did not begin working with contemporary jewelry until 1995 when a second bout with cancer involved her in an art and healing class. She believes this allowed her to reach her full artistic potential.

"I find immense pleasure in creating pieces of jewelry that evoke the senses," said Saad. "I enjoy creating colors, shapes and images in inventive combinations of art glass, blister pearls, semi-precious stones and sterling silver."

Saad's jewelry and paintings are represented by galleries and retail merchants throughout the Carolinas, and she has a growing client base of collectors throughout the United States.
