Guilford College in Greensboro, NC, Features Works by Hung Liu

Guilford College in Greensboro, NC, is presenting the exhibition, Hung Liu: A Decade of Paintings, featuring contemporary Chinese paintings in the Guilford College Art Gallery in Hege Library through May 6, 2005. This California artist explores her Chinese heritage and identity in an exhibition of twelve large-scale oil paintings.

Born in Changchun, China in 1948, Liu is currently an associate art professor at Mills College in Oakland, CA. Growing up during the Maoist Cultural Revolution, she and thousands of other educated Chinese citizens were forcibly sent to rural communes in an effort to raise the country's agricultural production through collective labor. When she was allowed to return to Beijing, she earned a BFA in Education from the Beijing Teachers College and later earned the equivalent of a MFA in mural painting from the prestigious Central Academy of Fine Art. In 1984 she was permitted to travel to the United States for further study, earning her MFA degree at University of California-San Diego two years later.

Trained in the rigid social realist style of painting, Liu now applies her paint more freely and builds up her images with multiple layers of transparent glazes. She uses rare, turn-of-the-century, documentary photographs from China as source material for her images, which examine issues of ethnicity, politics and gender. All paintings in the exhibition, which includes works from several of Liu's most well-known series, are on loan from the Bernice Steinbaum Gallery (Miami, FL). The Freeman Foundation has provided generous funding for the exhibition and the artist's visit.
