Hilton Head Art League on Hilton Head island, SC, Offers Works by Helen Evans

The Hilton Head Art League on Hilton Head Island, SC, is presenting a collection of watercolors and oils by Helen Evans called, Here, There and Beyond. These paintings chronicle Evans' travels and numerous life experiences in different parts of the world. Some paintings, Here, are based on local, Lowcountry scenes. Paintings from There, cover other parts of the United States. And, paintings from Beyond, include locations from other parts of the world. The show continues through June 4, 2005.

Growing up in a family that moved frequently because of job transfers, Evans continued the same pattern in her marriage and considered each move, ".. an opportunity and an adventure." She views her art in the same way. "Each medium brings its own challenges," she says, "and each challenge gives me an opportunity to try new methods and techniques." Evans started working in pastels, then moved on to watercolors and is now exploring oils. The subjects of her paintings span the gamut from Hilton Head Island to Haiti, Illinois to Italy, Puerto Rico, England, Franc, and Mexico.

Evans went back to college in her 40's to take drawing, painting and design classes and has an associate degree from the College of DuPage. She worked in Christian art, creating banners and pulpit hangings for churches in Illinois, Utah and Puerto Rico and banners for national women's conference for the state of Illinois. Though this show is composed entirely of paintings, she had studied hand-built ceramics with Jaime Suarez and Jerry St. Germain in Puerto Rico and exhibited her work in a gallery in Old San Juan.

Evans is a member of the Southern Watercolor Society, South Carolina Watercolor Society, Hilton Head Art League, Beaufort Art League and the Society of Bluffton Artists where she has been juried into numerous shows. Her work can also be seen at Pluff Mudd Gallery in Bluffton, SC, and the Hilton Head Framing and Gallery.

The Hilton Head Art League is a not-for-profit membership organization, dedicated to promoting the visual arts in the community and enhancing the art skills of its members. It operates a gallery in Pineland Station for the display and sale of artwork by its members.
