Penland Gallery in Penland, NC, Offers Botanical Artwork

It's springtime and the Penland Gallery in Penland, NC, has burst into bloom along with everything else. The gallery is featuring a new exhibition entitled, Botanical Wonder, which features works in clay, glass, metals, textiles, photography and mixed-media - all inspired by plant life. The show runs through June 5, 2005.

Jeff and Yaffa Todd

Included in the show are life-size glass garden flowers by Yancey County artists Jeff Todd and Yaffa Todd and several small sculptures by Mitchell County artist Richard Ritter which present a riot of tiny floral imagery encased in clear glass. Glassblower Flo Hatcher is represented by an exquisite, botanically accurate, glass cactus. Carmen Grier, also a local artist, presents her intricately dyed and stitched wall pieces, which take a more abstract approach to plant imagery. Jewelry in the show includes Marcia Macdonald's brightly colored brooches which incorporate a number of different materials.

Local potters Michael Kline and Holly Walker both have functional pots decorated with botanical imagery in the show. Painter Robert Johnson is showing several of his intricate compositions inspired by his field sketches. Blacksmith Elizabeth Brim presents a pair of fanciful steel shoes whose ribbons entwine a bouquet of flowers. Julie Leonard's wall piece is actually made from a variety of plant materials.

In addition to this special exhibition, the sales area of the Penland Gallery represents many other artists affiliated with Penland School of Crafts.

Penland School of Crafts is a national center for craft education located in Western North Carolina. Penland offers workshops in books and paper, clay, drawing, glass, iron, metals, printmaking, photography, textiles, and wood. The school also sponsors artists' residencies, an outreach program, and a craft gallery open to the public. Penland is a nonprofit, tax-exempt institution which receives support from the North Carolina Arts Council, an agency funded by the State of North Carolina and the National Endowment for the Arts.
