Dog Art Dealer/Horse Art Dealer in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Constance Depler Coleman

Dog Art Dealer/Horse Art Dealer in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, Constance Depler Coleman: Pastels and Oils, on view from May 23 through June 23, 2007.

A duplicate of a painting from the permanent collection at the Museum of the Dog in St. Louis, MO, of Barney & Miss Beazley (Bush), an oil of the two Scotties lounging on a wing chair in the Diplomats Reception Room of the White House will be on view at the gallery. Along with commissioned portraits of private collectors' dogs there will be pastels of many popular breeds for sale.

Coleman, the mother of modern American dog portraiture, travels all over the United States and Europe painting commissions for well known pet owners such as Oprah Winfrey, Oscar De La Renta, and T. Boone Pickens. She started her career painting caricatures of people as their pets (some of which are already collector's items). Her early work evolved into her current extraordinary heirloom portraits of dogs, cats, and even pet otters. Coleman has painted over 300 oil portraits and is still going strong.

From the time Coleman was in the first grade, at Columbia University's Lincoln School, she was found to have an artistic bent. While attending Berkeley High School, she illustrated her first book. Her higher schooling included Dominican College of San Rafael, USC, the California College of Fine Arts in San Francisco, and other institutions.

Dog Art Dealer is located on a quaint cobblestone street across from the City Gallery at Waterfront Part in Charleston. The gallery was originally founded by Jaynie Milligan Spector in the Fall of 2001 and is now a fully functioning art gallery and a source for paintings by international, national, and regional artists, who paint 21st-century style portraits of dogs, cats and horses. The gallery also sells select 19th and 20th century paintings and giclee prints. With an excellent eye for quality art in various styles and experience in directing clients, the Dog Art Dealer assists in the commissioning process by taking into account the client's budget with portraits ranging from $500 to $25,000 and stylistic preferences by giving clients advise in the selection of the artist that is best suited for the portrait. Spector has been a liaison in commissioning paintings as far as Italy, for Dan and Dean Caten, the renowned fashion designers of DSquared2.
